Wine Apps we like – Top 6

These days, Apple’s trademark catchphrase “There’s an app for that”,  can be uttered for a wide variety of industries and interests and wine drinkers have not been left out. From wine recommendations to keeping track of wines you have sampled – there are many “apps for that”. We have compiled a list of six wine apps we like at Le Pommier.

1. Vivino

Vivino helps you remember your favourite wines, learn more about wine and even helps you choose wines to try. Taking a photo of a wine label scans the Vivino wine database for info on the wine and you can add your own reviews to the listing as well.

Vivino is both informative and social, you can learn more about wine, keep track of your wine drinking experiences and share it with your friends and other wine drinkers. Why not review your next bottle of Le Pommier on Vivino?

2. Delectable

Much like Vivino, Delectable allows you to learn, review, discover and share wine. One of the most impressive features the newsfeeds of top sommeliers, winemakers and other wine pros that you can follow. The app is not limited to wine and also has sections for beer and spirits.

This app was initially only available on iOS but has now also been released for Android, so the Apple user base is significantly larger and more developed.

3. The Platter’s App

Platter’s has released an app for iOS that is similar to Vivino and Delectable but boasts access to their extensive database, and especially useful to South African users. The app features label-recognition scanning, all the current Platter’s edition’s ratings, key information on producers and their wines.

Unfortunately there is no Android version for this app yet.

NextGlass is also similar to Vivino and Delectable, and like Delectable, not limited to wine, it lets you track and review beer as well.

5. Wine Dictionary

This is a very basic app by Wine Apps LLC, which explains, in plain English, all the fancy words used to describe wine. This dictionary contains the words used to describe the taste of wine, which grapes are used in which wines or wine regions, and so on. The app developer has also created a wine companion app similar to Vivino and Delectable, called Wine Secretary.

Unfortunately this app is not available on iOS but there is similar Wine Dictionary app available in the app store for around R15 (sadly, the reviews on that one do not look too great).

6. VinoMobile Wine Trainer

This App helps you practice your knowledge of wine knowledge in a playful way. The app features a series of questions on wine geography, grape varieties, tasting characteristics, storage periods and other topics ranging in difficulty.

The free version includes about 100 questions. You can purchase an additional 700 questions for around R35.

There are several other educational apps available in the VinoMobile series for wine buffs.
